Wesley Ward targets Deauville with Royal Ascot star Campanelle

Dual Royal Ascot winner Campanelle is set to cross the Atlantic again for her next assignment with Wesley Ward eyeing further G1 success in the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on August 8.

Ward is also readying stablemate Golden Pal for his seasonal debut next week at Saratoga, with the G3 Quick Call on Thursday's opening card at the Spa on the agenda for the Breeders' Cup winner.

Campanelle will be visiting France for the second time, having landed last year's G1 Prix Morny after scoring in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

She was promoted to first place in last month's Commonwealth Cup back at the royal meeting at the expense of Dragon Symbol after a bumping match inside the final furlong; an appeal from Dragon Symbol's connections was turned down a week ago.

Campanelle is currently at Ward's Keeneland training base. "She's ready for a work," Ward said, speaking to the NYRA media team.

"We're in a little bit of a pickle because we're mandated to breeze on the dirt. That's her home track and that's where she thrives. Her race is about a month from now in France."

Golden Pal, last seen winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland, worked five furlongs on turf at Belmont on Thursday morning. "From what I see with him in the mornings, he's just extremely talented," commented Ward.
