Europe Targets The Turf

Aidan O'Brien brings another stellar team of horses to Santa Anita, after celebrating a hat-trick of victories at Keeneland last year.

O'Brien is third in the overall list of winning trainers for these Championships, with 16. Only U.S. trainers Wayne Lukas (20) and Bob Baffert (18) have trained more winners in history

Leading the Ballydoyle pack this year is Auguste Rodin. The 2023 Epsom Derby winner would be the runaway favourite if he hadn't bombed in the King George at Ascot this summer.

European horses have taken home the Breeders' Cup Turf in seven of the last eight years, and with six Group 1 winners likely to line up at Santa Anita it's hard to see that this trend will not continue.

Mostahdaf, John Gosden's son of Frankel, arrives off the back of two big Group 1 victories this summer (Prince of Wales's; Juddmonte International) while French challenger Onesto has been well-backed.

King of Steel was an impressive Champions Stakes winner at Ascot last week for Frankie Dettori and Roger Varian, but that was a tough race in testing ground from which to bounce back so quickly. The hopes of America are largely held in the four hooves of Todd Pletcher's Up To The Mark , but a non-European victor would be the surprise of the meeting.
