A miserable day at Sha Tin

Cold and very wet and the loss of a beautiful horse

That's the best way to sum up Sunday at Sha Tin.  The rain which continued through the afternoon produced a very rare soft track and the times reflected that.

In the first race, the Class 2 over 2000m the horses crawled which did not suit the favourite Berlin Tango who finished out of the placings.  Looking Great was the winner from Enjoying and Charity Go.

In the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup Waikuku could not get out, first being blocked by Sky Field and then he needed to wait for a gap between a couple of horses and by the time he could get through Wellington was off and gone.  Ka Ying Star turned in a good run for second and Waikuku finished third with Sky Field fourth.

The best thing about the Citi HK Gold Cup was the double to Douglas Whyte with Russian Emperor, under a top ride from Blake Shinn, defeating stablemate Savvy Nine 57.0.  Golden Sixty was ridden as usual at the back of the field but in the conditions too far back and not taking into consideration the speed of the two Whyte horses.  Another oods-on shot went down in a G1.

But the race will be remembered for the sad story of Sky Darci who suffered a fracture to his left hind fetlock around the 850m mark.  Sky Darci won the Derby in 2021 and had been a delightful horse for all who worked with him.  Condolences.
