HK Champion's Day 2022

The 3 G1s this year have certainly established the champions in each of their respective categories.

In the Sprint Wellington was given a confident ride by Badel as he overcame the wide draw with a good start and the rest as they say is history.  It will show Wellington's superiority in the category as he beat Computer Parch by an easy 1 ¼ lengths and Sky Field just third.  Super Wealthy who ran fourth was unlucky as he got blocked for a run at a crucial stage but he would not have beaten the winner.

The Champions Mile saw Golden Sixty back to his imperious best as he headed California Spangle by two lengths using his great turn of foot to good purpose.  He thus broke the record for Prize Money in Hong Kong recording his 21st win from 24 starts.  He is the best horse in Hong Kong and there is mention of a trip to Japan for the Yasuda Kinen but really what has he beaten?  California Spangle is a nice horse and certainly worthy of G1 status but there are several in Japan who could beat him at this stage.  However as a 4yo he may get stronger with age.

Romantic Warrior endorsed his status by adding the QEII Cup to his Derby win.  Picked out in Ireland for the HKJC by Mick Kinane, the son of Acclamation is now receiving acclamation of his own as in a short time he has come through the classes and now won the rare double of the Derby and the QEII.

It was part of a great week for Karis Teetan with the arrival of daughter Isabella on Tuesday and part of a great quinella for Danny Shum when Tourbillon Diamond ran second.  Panfield who has had several issues to contend with and is still an entire ran third but 2 ¼ lengths back and a similar margin to Ka Ying Star who is such a reliable conveyance.  For us Russian Emperor was disappointing in 5th.

Owners and companions were allowed in and at least there were some people there – let's hope everyone can come in December, but we are not holding our breath.
