And it did – Kentucky Derby 2022

It may be some time before there is another Kentucky Derby like #148.  The winner, Rich Strike, was still an emergency when we did our preview but he got into the race at the last minute and became the second longest-priced winner on 80/1 for trainer Eric Reed and jockey Sonny Leon.

Mikael Barzalona on Summer is Tomorrow went off at a suicidal pace and Lemaire on Crown Pride had no choice but to keep up with him as he was being pushed along by Messier.  All we can say is that none of the first 10 horses at the halfway stage was in the first ten finishers.

It was a happy story for trainer Eric Reed who lost several horses in a barn fire a few years ago and the Venezuelan-born Sonny Leon who is the leading rider in some remote part of Cincinatti.

And no we didn't have anything on the winner and don't know of anyone who did.  The second and third home – Epicentre and Zandon – ran well and looked for a bit as if they were going to fight out the finish.  Both should probably go to the Preakness.  Word is that most of the runners have emerged well after the race and connections are considering their next moves.
