Royal Ascot '22 Day 2

With Tuesday's sunshine taking some moisture out of the track there will be watering overnight before Day 2.

The day's Group races will start with the Queen Mary for the 2yo fillies over 1000m and there will be 21 competing.

There are two fillies topping the market who won very well in their respective debut races – Dramatised, a daughter of Showcasing, from Karl Burke's yard with Dan Tudhope on board and they have a quote of11/4, and the American raider Love Reigns who will give Wesley Ward and Irad Ortiz a chance of redemption and the daughter of US Navy Flag is on 10/3.

While her win was sensational, she's a 2yo and has had to now cope with international travel and a complete change of surroundings so it is quite an ask.

Maria Branwell 8/1 has won both her starts to date – she's by James Garfield and is trained by David O'Meara and will have Kevin Shoemark in the irons.  Katey Kontent is a daughter of Havanna Grey and is on 17/2 for Cox-Kirby and we have a roughie here in Manhattan Jungle 25/1 – she's won all 3 of her starts in France and is a daughter of Bungle Inthejungle.  Mikael Barzalona rides for Amy Murphy.

The Queen's Vase G2 over 2800m has 15 3yos lining up.  Eldan Eldarov is on 11/4 for Roger Varian and David Egan and is an unbeaten son of Dubawi.  Godolphin's Nahanni was 7th in the Derby and Appleby-Buick are expecting a much better run here.  He's by Frankel and has more experience than some of these so 4/1 could be value.  Anchorage 11/2 is the Irish raider here from Aidan O'Brien's yard and is another Galileo and Ryan Moore will ride.  The Queen's Perfect Alibi is trained by William Haggas and Tom Marquand will be aboard the son of Le Havre and they could be e/w value at 12/1.

The Prince of Wales's Stakes G1 over 2000m makes up for the lack of quantity – only 5 runners – with a huge wallop of quality.  It's a really interesting race with Sir Michael Stoute's Bay Bridge even money favourite under Ryan Moore and he looks to be a very good horse indeed, but we have to say we prefer Shahryar here, the Japanese winner of the Sheema in Dubai and prior to that was the Japanese Derby winner in 2021.  He's by the great Deep Impact and has a great finish.  He's won over longer and shorter trips than this.

Cristian Demuro rode him in Dubai and knows Ascot.

Then there's State of Rest, who won the Cox Plate last year and won in France on resumption for Joseph O'Brien and Shane Cross and Lord North won in Dubai and it has all the hallmarks of a great race.

The Duke of Cambridge is G2 for the f&M over 1600m with the Jane Chapple-Hyam trained Saffron Beach top pick on 5/2.  William Buick has the ride this time.  She ran well in Dubai and seems to have come back in good form.  Bashkirova is on 3/1 for Haggas-Marquand and Irish raider Mother Earth on the same quote with Ryan Moore riding for Aidan O'Brien.
