Newbury Saturday

It's the Hackwood Stakes G3 over 1200m featuring.

Fortunately for all concerned the field has 14 runners.  Last Saturday the final race had to be scrapped as trainers refused to declare their runners for the very modest prize money on offer.

Small fields has been a big problem in European racing of late with the available prize money not tempting owners to travel horses especially during the heatwave conditions.

Last Friday more than half the fixtures had fewer than 6 runners and only 11 of them had enough runners for an each way bet.

The Hackwood is quite open and has Richard Hannon's Happy Romance on top at 4/1 with Sean Levy doing the steering, Minzaal 5/1 for Owen Burrows and Jim Crowley and we have a liking for Go Bears Go for David Loughnane and Rossa Ryan – ignore the Ascot run and before that he had some very reasonable results.
