King George Day at Ascot

Well the temperature has dropped a big but the racing is still hot.

Ascot on Saturday hosts the celebrated King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes G1 over 2400m and this year's edition has only 6 starters but they are top horses.

Leading the pack is Westover, the very impressive winner of the Irish Derby.  He looks to be something special and 11/8 makes him backable.  Colin Keane has the ride again for Ralph Becket.  We also like Mishriff who did very well at his last outing and James Doyle booked for the ride is a positive move in our books.  10/3.  And we will put in German raider Torquator Tasso, who has come to hand very early in his prep for his defence of the Arc and is value here at 10/1 and should be kept safe.

And the others?  The Brits are very keen on Emily Upjohn who didn't go to Ireland last weekend as the plane that was to take her there suffered a bird strike.  So she has come here.  While we think she is a delightful filly and people are trying to make excuses for her Epsom second, that was 5 lengths back on Epsom.  We love Broome very much but he may just be outclassed here.

The afternoon starts with the Princess Margaret for the 2yo fillies over 1200m with a field of 8.  Lezoo is by Zoustar so we have to love her and she's 7/4 for Beckett-Dettori.  Kinto is 6/1 for Boughey-Buick and is a daughter of Sioux Nation.  She may be the roughie of the field but Cuban Mistress, by Havana Grey, has experience on her side and 3 second and 2 win in her last four outings so why not, we say.  20/1.

The Valiant Stakes is G3 for f&m over 1600m with 8 to run.  Zambaq in the Shadwell colours is on 2/1 for Varian -Crowley and the much-travelled Jumbly is racing at home this weekend and is 10/3 for the Charltons and Hollie Doyle.  German raider Novemba represents the Peter Schiergen yard with Rene Piechuluk riding and they are on 7/2 and we also like Oscula 9/2 for Boughey-Buick for a 4th pick despite the small field.
