Cox Plate 2023 – The Raiders

There's one from Hong Kong who will start favourite and one from Ireland that may have gone under the radar.

Romantic Warrior is the runner from Hong Kong.  He's a 5yo by Acclamation out of a Street Cry dam and trained by Danny Shum.  In his 15 starts he's won 10 and placed twice.  His run om the Hong Kong Cup last December when he beat Danon The Kid by 4 ½ lengths was breathtaking, but his runs since then have been less so.  He was 4th in the Turnbull which is a pass mark but still 4 lengths behind Gold Trip who re-opposes.  And how will he take the tight turns of Moonee Valley?  Currently on about 3.90 fixed odds but he would have to run as well as he did in the HK Cup to justify that price.

The Irish raider is Victoria Road from Aidan O'Brien's yard who now has Aussie interest in the ownership.  He's a 3yo by Saxon Warrior out of an Invincible Spirit dam.  His record from 10 races is 4 wins two seconds and a third.  He had a great 2yo year culminating in winning the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf.  In France prior to that he beat Blue Rose Cen in a listed race.  Blake Shinn will take the ride and as a 3yo he's got a big weight advantage over most of the dangers (except Militarize who is on the same weight) and has drawn Gate 5.  O'Brien feels he is coming into good form and the current fixed odds price of 13.00 is certainly worth a bit of e/w.
