There was a great crowd on hand – biggest since before the pandemic – but not that many horses in the Class 1 Chinese New Year Cup.  Only 6 lined up and really only two of them were in top form – the favourite up-and-comer Mugen and the consistent Red Lion who had a bigger weight impost.  It was a very tight finish but in the end it was Red Lion who got his nose in front.

The Class 2 Yu Yee Handicap at least had a few more runners and quite a number of these were capable of winning the 1200m contest.  It went in the end to Howdeepisyourlove under Brenton Avdulla who managed to get through traffic and the favourite Galaxy Patch was too late into the clear to catch the winner who, like Red Lion, was trained by John Size.  Size trained the third home – Bundle of Charm with Packing Treadmill a respectable fourth.

Happy Valley this week races on Thursday.
