TRIAL COMMENTS

LADY SHARAPOVA - Great to see this daughter of Fastnet Rock back and she looks to have furnished into a smart racehorse as many thought she would. Settled fourth and had a lovely run in transit. Came with a good run under little pressure and went nicely. Smart horse on her way to better things. A debut win surely isn't far away. Golden Rose sneaky chance at $101?

SUMMARY

A fantastic way to kick off the program with a field of 9 progressive 3YO’s on a very soggy Rosehill track. Amazingly, despite the moderately sized field we have 6 last start winners and the heavy track just adds to the difficulty in lining these horses up.

Two blackbookers engaged and both are coming off last start victories. We have plenty of time for the Hawkes trained LADY SHARAPOVA and she didn’t let us down, being heavily supported and winning in superb fashion first-up over 1250m at Canterbury. She came from well back and sprinted very nicely in what was a moderately run affair. Again, she may have to go back here from barrier 9 and come with a wide run in the straight. She does have to carry a similar weight to the males in this but she actually drops in weight from that first up run and should have taken plenty of improvement since then. We think she is a very talented filly and feel with any luck in this event from the draw and if she handles the heavy conditions she must be considered a leading contender in what is a strong race.

BURNING PASSION rebounded very well from a disappointing first-up run when winning in dominant fashion at Canterbury last start. Notably, that was on a heavy track so we know he gets through it reasonably well. While this is harder, he has ability, has a reasonable base of fitness and is expected to be thereabouts here. His trial before this prep was good so it was no surprise to see him put the score on the board last start with the addition of blinkers. The form through the Rosebud held up last week with Scissor Kick winning again. For that reason, ECHO PRINCE who was only beaten by 1.5 lengths, must be respected here. Barrier 4 should see him get a nice run in transit and the Casino Prince colt gets weight off every other runner in the race.

A case can be made for at least 7 of these here and it looms as a very challenging betting affair, especially on a heavy track. We certainly can’t talk you out of anything if you have a strong opinion on the race. Siding to the filly LADY SHARAPOVA and hoping she gets a bit of luck and handles the conditions. The double figure price on offer is appealing. Another at very good odds is ECHO PRINCE. He opened some $34 and that looked a great price for a horse with ability and a winning chance.

TRIAL COMMENTS

HALLOWED CROWN - Winner of 2 from 2 including a Group 3 last start. This son of Street Sense showed good speed to lead. Cruised along in the straight and went very nicely. Wanted to win and untouched. Lovely piece of work. $51 for the Golden Rose might be worth a dabble. Nice effort here.

SUMMARY

The highlight of the day and what a fascinating affair the Group 3 Run To The Rose is. Wow, where to start!? So many unknowns here, especially given the track conditions. Somewhat surprisingly, there doesn’t look a huge amount of speed engaged. Perhaps it could be SNIPER FIRE or YGRITTE that take up the running. Of course it all depends on how well they all travel in the going.

One horse that relishes these conditions, as shown in his dominant win in the Group 3 Kindergarten last prep when accounting for Washington Heights is HALLOWED CROWN. Loved the way he trialled and he duly entered our blackbook. Notably, in his first trial leading in he beat both Panzar Division and Kuro who have both performed very nicely since. Get the feeling this son of Street Sense could be a serious talent and on his way to bigger and better things. Expecting him to run a bottler here and lookout come the Golden Rose and into the Melbourne Spring. First-up on the heavy is the only query but at least we know he gets through it well.

SARAJEVO is our other blackbooker and for those playing future markets, he may need to win this to gain a start into the Golden Rose. That could possibly mean he is wound up and ready to go today. His fresh run was very good without having a lot of luck and he ran through the line nicely. Expecting him to have taken a good deal of benefit from that hit out and be competitive in this event.

The Waterhouse trained ALMALAD is a former blackbooker that has taken all before him in his short career, winning three on end and all in very nice fashion. He hasn’t put a foot wrong and comes into this with a big spruik on him. Unfortunately he hasn’t been seen this time in with no official trials but Gai did a similar thing with Pierro when he won this race in 2012. This son of Al Mahar could be something special but he has to concede weight to a couple of smart types on a heavy track first-up which has to be a little query. Short enough but will have plenty of admirers.

The Paul Perry trained SCRATCH ME LUCKY loves these conditions and really hit his straps late in his prep last time when running very well in similar conditions over further. Expecting him to be running home well and he could be a blowout hope. That said, he may be better over further and for the experience.

Despite being first-up, really think HALLOWED CROWN can measure up and be super competitive at a nice each way quote. Happy to side with him on an each way basis with more to place. If SARAJEVO can handle the heavy track, he must be considered a strong hope and we could possibly save on him. ALMALAD an obvious chance along with a few others in what is a fascinating race.
