From The Stewards' Room - Saturday October 14

Key pointers from the stewards’ reports at the feature race meeting at Randwick last Saturday, October 14.

Pumpkin Pie (Race 4): The mare was one of the main fancies in the Anniversary Highway but ended as one of the hard luck stories of the day. Rider Hugh Bowman said he became badly held up behind a weakening runner after straightening and when he attempted to ease around that horse was blocked when another runner shifted out, leaving him pocketed. Finally through a gap the mare again became held up on heels and was unable to be tested at any stage in the straight. Pumpkin Pie was cleared of any injuries and can be forgiven next time she steps out.

Washington Heights (Race 7): The gelding finished well back in the Sydney Stakes but a vet check revealed an excuse with the six-year-old found to have been galloped on to the off-hind leg, which required treatment. Trainer Gerald Ryan was advised that Washington Heights would require a veterinary clearance before racing again.

She Will Reign (Race 8): The star filly was highly fancied in The Everest but was gone a long way from home and beat just one to the line. Rider Corey Brown explained the filly missed the start slightly, but was able to take up an advantageous position in the run. He said on straightening he felt his mount may have been galloped on as she shortened stride for a short distance and from then on failed to respond to his riding. A vet check confirmed She Will Be Reign had been galloped on to the near-hind tendon and hock and was coughing. The filly is off to the spelling paddock and will miss the remainder of the spring.

Vega Magic (Race 8): The Victorian was the eye-catching closer in The Everest, gaining second place from well back in the field. He was caught wide in the early stages without cover and was inclined to overrace as rider Craig Williams attempted to find cover. Vega Magic laid in under pressure in the straight forcing Williams to stop riding and straighten near the 150m. The gelding hit the line hard and looks a major player in the remaining feature sprints this spring.
