Historical Race Analysis - G1 Randwick Guineas 1600m

The decision to reduce it to a mile has been a resounding success given the winners of the race.

But it had to move again going to Warwick Farm however has come back to Randwick. Let’s check out some history as both the Randwick and Canterbury Guineas to find the first leg of the triple crown?

PROFILING THE RACE

o Under the new conditions of the race, barriers play of little import given the Randwick mile start is the best in racing. But at WF it is a different scenario.

o In the last 26 runnings (Rand/Cant/WF), fillies have only won 4 times and only once over the mile.

o Favourites have been right around the mark in this race.

o Don’t want to give away too much ground - you want to be near the leaders and with momentum or up the fence.

o The race had been alternating between Canterbury day, Canterbury night & Rosehill before the transformation of the race to Randwick over 1600m with a WF interlude.

o Last 10 Winners Average Price of winner - $6

o Breakdown of winners - 4 geldings, 5 colts & 1 filly.

o Races that the winner ran in prior - Hobartville Stks (6), Chipping Norton Stks (1), Australian Guineas (1), Newmarket Hcp (1), 3yo NMW (1)

RECENT WINNERS

2015 – HALLOWED CROWN 3c (Street Sense x Crowned Glory) ($2.88)

Jockey: Hugh Bowman, Trainer: Bart & James Cummings

Barrier: 1, Weight: 56.5kg, Gross Time: 1:35.06

Margin: 0.8L, Track: Good (3), Starters: 6

2nd: Sweynesse (56.5kg), 3rd: Shooting To Win (56.5kg)

Review: Already a winner of the Golden Rose, for some reason this colt was never mentioned as highly as others. With his only one defeat when having issues back in trip in the Roman Consul, he brilliantly won the Hobartville first up.

But again he wasn’t installed favourite in the Guineas. Only a small field after scratchings meant it was a tactical affair. STW led but Bowman made sure he wasn’t in the pocket.

McDonald on Sweynesse took inside runs and with 300m to go any of the three could win. While Shinn held STW together to get the mile, Bowman was into his colt but he responded strongly to fight them off.

2014 – DISSIDENT 3c (Sebring x Diana’s Secret) ($11)

Jockey: Jim Cassidy, Trainer: Peter Moody

Barrier: 12, Weight: 56.5kg, Gross Time: 1:36.33

Margin: 0.1L, Track: Good (3), Starters: 14

2nd: El Roca (56.5kg), 3rd: Eurozone (56.5kg)

Review: Peter Moody had not gotten much publicity since Black Caviar retired. He had a quiet Spring but once Moment Of Change got things moving a month earlier, Moody began to get on a roll.

This colt had not been getting much praise. Everyone wanted to keep finding others or horses that had been finishing behind him. But this was the horse who beat all bar Zoustar in the Golden Rose and was fourth in the Caulfield Guineas.

Jim Cassidy was happy to lead and worked there easily. El Roca ranged up to him and looked to win but ducked in. He fought on very well and kept an even field at bay.

2013 – DUNDEEL 3c (High Chaparral x Stareel) ($6.50)

Jockey: James McDonald, Trainer: Murray Baker

Barrier: 2, Weight: 56.5kg, Gross Time: 1:35.14

Margin: 0.5L, Track: Good, Starters: 11

2nd: Proisir (56.5kg), 3rd: Tatra (56.5kg)

Review: As part of a top 3yo crop, the race stood up so well despite missing Pierro and All Too Hard. It was run at Warwick Farm with the Randwick Grandstand still inhibiting racing in the CBD.

While many had thought the kiwi would be better suited over 2000m plus, his staying ability was to the fore anyway in a strongly run contest.

With Tatra and Tougher Than Ever punching out the speed, it was expected Proisir and Rebel Dane would be hardest to beat coming off the Hobartville but the horse who was next home in that race was close enough at the 400m to pounce on them out wide and charge away. It was a brilliant win.
