From The Stewards’ Room – September 24

Racing and Sports have scanned the stewards’ reports to find the key information punters need to know from Australian racing on Saturday September 24.

Rosehill:

Oh So Splendido (Race 1): overraced in the early stages and after being crossed by Cramming near the 1600m was steadied away from the heels of that runner. Rider G Schofield stated the only excuse he could offer for today's performance was the gelding raced keenly in the run. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Mandalong Kiss (Race 1): raced keenly in the early stages. Rounding the home turn was bumped on a number of occasions by More To Gain, which was endeavouring to shift to the outside of Oh So Splendido to obtain clear running. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have an abrasion to the offside hock and was displaying a poor post-race recovery and respiratory distress. Trainer Mr G Nickson advised that Mandalong Kiss would now be spelled. On this assurance no action was taken.

Alegria (Race 2): when questioned regarding his riding in the middle stages, rider T Clark stated that he was under no specific instructions other than he anticipated following Junoob in the run. He added when the tempo of the race, particularly in the middle stages, was much slower than average, his mount commenced to race a little keenly and he elected to make a forward move approaching the 800m to take advantage of his light weight so that his mount was not disadvantaged when the race developed into a sprint home. T Clark further stated there was no preconceived plan to ride his mount in this manner, but was an option he took in the race when Junoob, which he was following, did not quicken as he had anticipated it would.

Chaquinta (Race 2): rider C Reith reported that his mount raced flatly today and was somewhat disappointing, although stepping up significantly in grade. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the off-hind leg and had a small abrasion to the near-side knee. Trainer Mr J Cleary advised the mare would now be spelled. On this assurance no action was taken.

Van Halen (Race 3): slow to begin. Overraced in the early stages and near the 1100m was steadied away from the heels of Coming In Hot. Badly held up in the in the early part of the straight and at the 300m had to be checked away from the heels of Coming In Hot. Rider J Collett was cautioned against the practice of positioning himself too close to the heels of runners in front. After obtaining clear running for a brief distance between the 250m and the 150m, was then held up after racing in restricted room between Coming In Hot and Sadhika (C Reith), which shifted out. Consequently Van Halen went to the line without being tested. C Reith was advised to exercise more care.

Smart Amelia (Race 4): slow to begin. Rider G Schofield stated from his inside draw he was instructed to be positive on the filly as it had a tendency to miss the start at previous runs. He added he was able to take up a position with cover behind the early leaders, however, his mount raced flat and was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Cummings advised that in his view the filly may not have been suited by today's firmer surface. He undertook to report back on the condition of Smart Amelia subsequent to the race.

Purrari (Race 4): knuckled on jumping. Briefly tightened near the 1200m. Rider J Parr stated he had intended taking up a forward position and possibly leading on the filly, but Purrari blundered on jumping and consequently lost ground. He added he then settled in a midfield position, whereby the filly travelled comfortably, however he could offer no explanation for its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be coughing. Co-trainer Mr A Bott was advised a veterinary clearance would be required, including the results of an endoscopic examination, prior to Purrari racing again.

Fabvier (Race 4): rider B Avdulla stated his mount was stirred up prior to the race today. He added that he had to make some use of his mount to cross Purrari in the early stages, but after obtaining a position on the back of Smart Amelia never travelled comfortably. B Avdulla further stated when placed under pressure from the 500m his mount was disappointing and may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Thompson advised Fabvier would now be spelled.

Mediterranean (Race 5): raced keenly in the middle stages. Rider B Shinn stated he was caught wide in the early stages and, after making contact with Impending on a number of occasions as he endeavoured to obtain a position with cover on the back of Divine Prophet, he was able to follow that runner throughout the middle stages. He added in the straight Mediterranean was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr Peter Snowden advised Mediterranean would now be spelled.

Thronum (Race 5): rider T Angland stated the colt was able to obtain the lead comfortably in the early stages, whereby it was able to set a moderate tempo. He added Thronum was disappointing in its failure to respond to his riding in the straight and the only excuse he could offer was the colt was not suited by today's firmer surface. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia. Co-trainer Mr A Bott advised Thronum would now be spelled. Mr Bott was advised that a veterinary clearance, including the results of a satisfactory ECG, must be provided prior to the colt barrier trialling to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

Divine Prophet (Race 5): a post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt lost its near-hind plate in running.

Prized Icon (Race 6): on return to scale the Stewards considered an objection lodged by B Shinn, rider of 4th placegetter Prized Icon, against Retaliation being placed 3rd, alleging interference near the 150m. After considering all the evidence, the Stewards found that approaching the 150m Prized Icon, after being held up for clear running for some distance, shifted out to improve and established a narrow run between Swear and Retaliation and a short distance later Retaliation then shifted out, crowding the running of Prized Icon, resulting in Prized Icon making contact with Retaliation and Swear. As Stewards were of the view that had the interference not occurred Prized Icon would have finished in advance of Retaliation, the protest was upheld. The placings were amended to read: Veladero 1st, Honeywine 2nd, Prized Icon 3rd and Retaliation 4th. At a subsequent inquiry B Avdulla, rider of Retaliation was reprimanded and advised he must stop riding when his mounts comments to shift ground. When questioned regarding his riding of Prized Icon, B Shinn stated after following Oculist throughout the event, he was then unable to shift to the outside of that runner as he was racing inside the heels of Coonawarra. He said that he then was obliged to follow Honeywine into the straight, however when that runner did not initially quicken he then was held up until near the 250m before shifting out to obtain clear running.

High Mist (Race 6): rider G Schofield reported that his saddle slipped back on jumping, resulting in him being placed at a disadvantage throughout the event and restricted his ability to ride his mount out over the concluding stages in particular.

Swear (Race 6): which was lying on the off-side portion of its barrier and beginning awkwardly, shifted in across behind runners in the early stages. Overraced in the early stages. Over the final 150m raced in restricted room between High Mist and Prized Icon and made contact with Prized Icon, which was taken out by Retaliation, on a number of occasions.

Dixie Blossoms (Race 7): when questioned regarding being ridden more forward today, T Clark stated he had no specific instructions from connections. He added from his wide draw he was hopeful of obtaining a position in advance of some of the back markers and for this reason he placed his mount under pressure leaving the barriers. T Clark further stated that when C Reith, rider of Denmagic, which was positioned to his inside, was restraining his mount and had shown clear intent not to go forward, he allowed Dixie Blossoms to take up a position outside the lead.

Hi World (Race 8): after being crossed by Cape Crusader near the 600m, Entirely Platinum shifted out and made contact with Hi World, which resulted in Hi World being caught wide without cover from that point. Rounding the home turn and shortly after straightening Hi World and Cosmic Cube made contact as Cosmic Cube endeavoured to shift out around the heels of Entirely Platinum. Rider B Shinn stated after his mount jumped well he chose to take up a more forward position than he had anticipated. He added he was obliged to then make some use of his mount throughout the early and middle stages to hold his forward position. After being taken three wide from the 600m, when Entirely Platinum shifted to the outside of Cape Crusader, his mount then commenced to give ground. B Shinn further stated in his view Hi World did not appreciate the firmer track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination of Hi World, which weakened in the straight, did not reveal any abnormalities. The inquiry was adjourned so the Stewards can interview co-trainer Mr L Freedman.

Pindan Pearl (Race 9): over the concluding stages could not be fully tested when awkwardly placed to the inside of Harry Hotspur.

Jalan Jalan (Race 1): After becoming fractious in the barrier underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to race. Held up for clear running from approaching the 300 metres until near the 150 metres.

Magic Alibi (Race 1): Weakened in the straight – Rider Damian Lane could offer no explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with trainer Gerald Ryan.

Bring Something (Race 3): Held up for clear running from the 500 metres until the 300 metres.

Craven Image (Race 4): When questioned as to why he failed to ride his mount out inside the final 200 metres, rider Luke Nolen said he tested his mount to that point was reluctant to put his mount under any further pressure as, in his opinion, the gelding was not right in its action, in particular in the near fore. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with trainer Darren Weir.

I Am A Star (Race 5): Steadied at the 1300 metres to shift in across the heels of Royal Tithe. During the event lost the near fore plate.

Evacuation (Race 6): Underwent a veterinary examination on arrival on course and was passed suitable to race. Raced wide without cover from the 700 metres after being taken out off its course by Hardham, which when over racing, shifted off the heels of Archives. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

Violate (Race 6): Hampered at the start when contacted by Sacred Elixir (NZ), which shifted in. Had difficulty in obtaining clear running from straightening until shifting out passing the 100 metres and went to the line not fully tested.

Archives (Race 6): Hampered at the 600 metres and had to be steadied away from the heels of Revolving Door after being brushed and taken in by Hardham prior to rider Craig Newitt releasing the pressure.

Saracino (Race 6): Held up for clear running from the 350 metres until near the 100 metres.

Xtravagant (Race 7): Change of tactics - Connections advised that it would be ridden forward. Led. Weakened in the straight. Rider Damien Oliver could offer no explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with co-trainers S Autridge and J Richards

Counterattack (Race 7): Raced wide without cover and keenly through the middle stages. Eased over the concluding stages when tightened for room between Thames Court and Fast’N’Rocking, which was shifting out. Rider Craig Williams was of the view that Counterattack is best when ridden with some cover. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality and a swab sample was taken for analysis.

Atmospherical (Race 9): Taken in off its course passing the 1000 metres by Sheidel (app Dylan Dunn), which was shifting in. D Dunn was severely reprimanded. Weakened from the 200 metres. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slower than normal recovery.

Alpha Miss (Race 9): Bumped with Inz’N’Out at the 600 metres. Steadied upon straightening when giving ground and tightened by General Truce (app Beau Mertens), which shifted out. B Mertens was severely reprimanded. Rider Dwayne Dunn reported his mount did not have a lot of luck in the event and would benefit from the run.
