Chetwood Off To Melbourne For Australia Stakes

Godolphin’s exciting sprinter Chetwood will switch to Melbourne for the start of his autumn campaign following his impressive barrier trial win at Randwick last week.

The talented John O’Shea-trained four-year-old won a trial over 1050m at Randwick on Thursday before rain forced the latter half of the trial session to be postponed.

The last eight trials from Thursday have been transferred to Monday and will include the heat featuring the G1 Doomben Ten Thousand winner Music Magnate.

Chetwood was having his second trial since resuming, having finished second in a 900m at Rosehill on December 20.

The winner of five of his seven starts is well advanced for the start of his new campaign in the G2 Australia Stakes (1200m) under the lights at Moonee Valley on January 27.

The Godolphin stable won the Australia Stakes last year with Holler and will use the race as Chetwood’s springboard to a possible Group One win during the Melbourne carnival in the Oakleigh Plate or Newmarket Handicap.

Chetwood has been looked on as a future G1 winner for some time but has been patiently handled by Godolphin trainer John O’Shea. His light spring campaign saw him win Newcastle’s G3 Cameron Handicap (1350M) and the Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield at his last start in October.

His class was evident in Thursday’s trial win where he was ridden by Hugh Bowman. He sat wide on the soft track and had plenty in hand wining his heat by one and a half lengths.

O’Shea may also send his outstanding colt Astern to Melbourne for the start of his autumn campaign in the $750,000 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 18.

O’Shea is yet to trial Astern and is also anxious to assess the condition of the Flemington straight course before finalising his plans for the colt.

O’Shea will give the consistent sprinter Grunderzeit his chance to earn a black type win in Friday’s Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at the Gosford Cup meeting.

The consistent five-year-old won back to back races at Canterbury before his last start third from a wide barrier in the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) on December 31.
