Anzac Day Option For Sydney Cup Rerun

The visiting Godolphin stayers Penglai Pavilion and Polarisation will stay for a rescheduled Sydney Cup if it is added to the Anzac Day program at Randwick on April 25.

However if the ATC decide to run the race next Saturday at Randwick those stayers, and the majority of the field that lined up in the no race on Saturday, will be missing.

The ATC is yet to determine the fate of the Sydney Cup after the race ended in disaster due to a series of incidents that disrupted the field.

Stewards acted quickly to declare the 3200m event a no race after Almoonqith broke down on the turn out of the home straight on the first lap, about 1200m after the start.

Almoonqith suffered fatal injuries. His rider James Doyle was dislodged along with Blake Shinn, who came off Who Shot Thebarman while trying to avoid the fallen Almoonqith.

Warning sirens and attempts by the clerks of the course to alert the field that the Sydney Cup had been declared a no race failed to stop half a dozen horses completing the course due to their riders being oblivious to the stewards decision.

They included both Polarisation and Penglai Pavilion, who were ridden out to be the first and third horse to pass the winning post before their riders realised the race had been abandoned.

James Ferguson, in charge of the Charlie Appleby-trained stablemates, said plans for the pair to return to the UK would be delayed pending a Sydney Cup re-run decision.

However the Godolphin stable has reported that the pair are likely to run if the $2 million race is re-scheduled for Anzac Day, giving the horses just over two weeks to recover from Saturday’s no race.

However there is no chance they would back up next Saturday if the ATC adds the Sydney Cup to the All-Aged Stakes and Champagne Stakes program.

The ATC is believed to be canvassing the connections of all the horses who lined up on Saturday before making a decision on whether the Sydney Cup can be run on a new date this autumn.

Darren Weir, the trainer of the Sydney Cup favourite Big Duke, said the stayer had not suffered any ill effects from the no race drama and would stay in work if the race is re-scheduled for Anzac Day.

Weir said he was not in favour of the race being run next Saturday.
