2017 Stradbroke Handicap - Weights and Barrier Favour Gold Symphony

Randwick trainer Peter Snowden believes Brisbane jockey Jim Byrne can complete the Doomben Ten Thousand-Stradbroke Handicap double for his stable at Doomben on Saturday.

Byrne rode Redzel to win last month’s Doomben Ten Thousand (1200m) for the Snowden stable and will link with Gold Symphony in Saturday’s $1.5 million Stradbroke over the 1350m course.

Both horses are trained by Peter and Paul Snowden for Triple Crown syndicates.

Snowden believes a big weight shift and a favourable barrier draw have enhanced Gold Symphony’s chances of turning the tables on Stradbroke favourite Clearly Chosen.

Gold Symphony has drawn barrier 11 while Clearly Chosen has gate 20. Both horses wil come in three gates if the three emergencies fail to gain a start.

"The way the field is with the emergencies drawn under him Gold Symphony will come into barrier 8 which is perfect,” Snowden said.

"Horses with good chances have drawn wide while we're right there in the middle.

“There looks to be some good speed in the race for him to get some cover and the harder they go early the better. He holds a good chance from a good gate."

Gold Symphony, a dual G3 winner, finished third behind Clearly Innocent in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes at Scone on May 13 and gets a 5kg weight swing in his favour for Saturday’s rematch.

Clearly Chosen went on to win the Kingsford Smith Cup at Eagle Farm two weeks ago while Gold Symphony won a trial at Randwick on June 2.

Godolphin trainer Darren Beadman says Impending has had a perfect preparation for the Stradbroke but is obviously concerned about tactics from his wide gate, drawn one from the outside in 19.

“We’ll put a bit of thought into it and see what we can come up with,” Beadman said of the instructions he will issue to Impeding’s rider Corey Brown.

Impending has come through without any issues and since his last run he’s worked really well. He actually put in an outstanding piece of work at the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately the barrier is going to make it tougher for him but he’ll go into the race in great form, very fit and very well.”

Beadman has three other runners at Doomben and expects al his team to perform well, especially the filly Raiment in the Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) following the transfer of the meeting from Eagle Farm.

“Raiment didn’t really handle the ground at Eagle Farm last time out,” Beadman said.

“When she’s at her best she‘ll tow the rider into the straight, but she was hard at it and probably did well to run fifth.

“It took her a while to get over the run and from a good gate an on better ground she should be much better off.”

Godolphin’s other runners at Doomben are the consistent Moher in The Wayne Wilson (1600m) and Mogador in the Hinkler Handicap (1200m).

“Moher’s run in the Scone Cup had a lot of merit and he ran nicely again when he was third at Rosehill last start,” Beadman said.

“This looks a really good race for him. He’s worked well enough to be in the finish from a good gate.”

“Mogador has drawn the car park and he hasn’t run for a while, but he’s coming along nicely. It’s just a shame about the gate.”
