Healy Stakes Plan For Anatola

Sydney trainer Mark Newnham plans to press on with Anatola’s Brisbane campaign despite the mare’s abject failure at Doomben on Saturday.

Anatola started a short priced favourite in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m) after sizzling wins in fast times over the same distance at her previous two starts at Randwick and the Gold Coast in the Listed Silk Stocking.

However Anatola succumbed to early pressure in Saturday’s race and quickly faded out of contention to finish 11th in a field of 13.

Newnham has found nothing amiss with Anatola and has decided to leave the mare in Brisbane for races in the back half of the carnival.

Newnham said he will freshen the mare and set her for the G3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on June 23. The $150,000 Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton in July will also be considered.

Newnham also has Burning Passion in Brisbane but the Randwick trainer will bypass Saturday’s $700,000 Kingsford Smith Cup (1200mn) at Doomben and keep the sprinter fresh for his next start in the $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) on June 9.

The six-year-old recorded his first win for Newnham when he won the G3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last month before finishing seventh to English in the G1 Doomben Ten Thousand (1200m) on May 12.

Newnham said Burning Passion performs best when fresh and is confident he will benefit from the break of a month to the Stradbroke.
