Blinkers to bring out the best in Pandemic

A rise in trip and the addition of blinkers are seen as positives for Pandemic as he heads to the Listed Straight Six at Flemington.

James Cummings and the Godolphin team are banking on a set of blinkers bringing out the best in Pandemic  at Flemington.

The head-gear will be sported by the Godolphin-owned galloper for the first time in the Listed Straight Six (1200m) on Saturday.

And punters believe the addition of blinkers can spark Pandemic back into winning form with the son of Sepoy being backed on TAB from $6.50 into $4.20 favourite.

Pandemic showed his wares in Victoria late last year.

Following a win at Rosehill on December 5, Cummings sent the gelding south to claim the Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on December 26.

The Cummings team then sent Pandemic back to 1000m for some straight track experience at Flemington in which the gelding finished third behind the flying mare Fabergino.

Pandemic returned to Sydney and had a barrier trial at Rosehill before returning to Melbourne to run at The Valley in late March before another trip home to Sydney to run at Rosehill during the Autumn Carnival.

An experienced traveller, Pandemic then hit the road again, this time to Adelaide in the lead-up to the Group 1 Goodwood, where he ran second to Savatoxl in the Group 3 D C McKay Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on May 1, when sent out the $2.70 favourite.

And Cummings believes that performance has Pandemic in top order for Saturday.

"He's coming off a strong closing second to the winner of The Goodwood, so that form speaks for itself," Cummings said.

"He has placed down the straight at Flemington before and has a distance victory to his credit in the southern state."

Damien Oliver, who has been having a good run with Godolphin and Cummings in recent months, reunites with Pandemic on Saturday having ridden the sprinter to victory in the Christmas Stakes.
