Hot Hamer out to continue strong form

Sheffield-based trainer Rowan Hamer will be hoping to cash in on the final synthetic meeting until December when he is represented in three races in Devonport on Sunday.

Rowan Hamer has enjoyed the early season stretch of racing on his home track, winning at a 23.5% strike rate and placing at 52.9% with his 17 starters since 1 August.

Two of Hamer's four winners so far this season are in action on Sunday including last start winner Barjeel in the Thai Imperial Benchmark 66 Hcp (1350m).

The eight-year-old gelding has won three of his nine starts since transferring to Hamer from Marion Dalco and Hamer thinks he is a big chance of adding to that tally in the final race on Sunday.

"He's had a few issues which we've sorted out now," said Rowan Hamer about the last start winner.

"I think he had a bit left in the tank the other day; I think when he got to the front, he switched off a bit.

"The 60 (kilograms) is no issue and I think he is my best chance for the day," added the trainer who will also saddle up veteran galloper Raghu  in the race.

"He's an old horse (Raghu) and I'm not certain about the quick back-up but he has pulled up well and we're keen to run him on the synthetic while the races are here," said Hamer on the nine-year-old who settled well back when beaten less than two lengths last Sunday.

Banca Nip is another horse on the seven-day back-up, running a solid second over 1650m last Sunday and he jumps to the Devonport staying distance of 1880m in the Tasmanian Equine Dentistry Benchmark 74 Hcp.

"I'm not sure whether he runs the 1880m or not.

"I ran him over 1880m last prep, and he looked like he was going to win on the corner and they ended up running past him," said Hamer on the seven-year-old whose sole win past 1650m came over 1800m at Longford last year.

"I'm running him here to see whether we can go to the 2100m or need to drop him back to a mile."

The makeup of Hamer's runners in the opening race is still to be determined as Eight Margaritas doesn't have a jockey, Meigetsu has drawn poorly (18) and Maywyn Is The Word is third emergency.

"I'll chat to the owners about Meigetsu and we will make a decision," Hamer said when asked about Meigetsu who was scratched last Sunday when no rider was available.

Eight Margaritas is a debutante who is guaranteed a start in the field if Hamer can find a suitable jockey and the trainer says she's shown enough to be competitive.

"She's got a lot to learn, she will be a nice mare eventually."
