In Brief

  • Hobby trainer celebrates biggest win.
  • Mywordis clinches Devonport Cup berth.
  • Race plan plays out for Tyson.

Mywordis went into the race as a $15 outsiders in what was one of the best Sheffield Cup fields in ages.

In a blanket finish, Mywordis emerged triumphant by the narrowest of margins over last season's Launceston Cup winner Glass Warrior and Sh'bourne Renegade that was second in the same race with Swoop Dog doing his best work late to finish fourth.

"We had a plan if Sir Simon ($4.20 fav) led and that was to go up and race outside of him, but we didn't have to worry about that when Glass Warrior's rider sent that mare up to tackle the leader," Tyson said.

Mywordis was still pushed by apprentice Bradon Louis to sit at the leader's girth while Glass Warrior ($31) was trapped three-wide but approaching the home straight Mywordis forged to the lead and then staved off determined challenges to win narrowly from Glass Warrior and Sh'bourne Renegade ($9.75).

"We pretty much had to win this to get into the Devonport Cup because the race offers the winner ballot-free entry into the big race

"We can take a breather now and hopefully he pulls up well and we can go to the Devonport Cup with a little bit of confidence."

Providing Mywordis pulls up well from the outing he will line up in the $100,000 Ladbrokes Devonport Cup (1880m) on 5 January.

The Barry Campbell-trained Assaranca (Craig Newitt) was a late scratching owing to a mishap behind the barriers.

Watch Mywordis win the Sheffield Cup and secure a berth in next month's Ladbrokes Devonport Cup.
