Summer Fire causes upset in 3YO Classic

Quality filly Summer Fire caused a boilover when she powered home late to win the $75,000 3YO Classic over 1200m in Launceston on Wednesday.

In Brief

  • Smart filly ends prep with feature win.
  • Shock win for punters but not for her trainer.
  • Deserved spell but plans are big for next season.

Turk Warrior was backed as if unbeatable starting the $1.12 favourite and he looked to be cruising in behind the leader Etosha when they reached the top of the home straight.

But when he surprisingly started to feel the pinch 100 metres from home, Summer Fire and exciting filly Emily charged home to swamp the favourite with Adam Trinder's filly gaining the nod from the judge.

Summer Fire was purchased last year by Armidale Stud as a potential broodmare, but from her first start in Tasmania she has shown above average ability and taking the scalp of Turk Warrior was no mean feat.

"This was always going to be her grand final and to be honest we were hoping to dodge Turk Warrior but today she was up to the task, and I am confident she could go on and be contesting the state's two Group 3 fillies and mares' races (Bow Mistress and Vamos Stakes) at this time next season," Trinder said.

"She will be let down at home and next week she will be off to Armidale for a decent spell."
