Nerodio will be a surprise starter in Saturday’s $125,000 Listed Bolton Sprint (1200m) at Belmont.

Nerodio was having a short break after winning a second consecutive Beaufine Stakes (1000m) two weeks ago, but trainer Stephanie Bakranich had a change of heart.

"My original plan was to bypass the Bolton and give him a freshen-up before the Belmont Newmarket (1200m)," Bakranich told The Races WA.

"I thought that was the best way to go with him as he races well fresh and I like to space out his runs.

"He was in the paddock for five days, but was just doing so well, I have never seen him better.

"His work last week was good and again on Tuesday, so I thought why not have a go.

"He was towing me around this morning and is jumping out of his skin.

"If it doesn't work out, he still has a three weeks before the Belmont Newmarket."

Nerodio is certain to be racing on wet going on Saturday with heavy rain set to hit Perth this week.

Nerodio's appreciation for a rain affected surface was a consideration for Bakranich but not an overriding factor in her decision.

"He does like a soft track, but it's an added bonus and not the major reason on why he is running," Bakranich said.

"The main reason he is going around is because he is doing so well and has come through the Beaufine Stakes better than what I thought."

After defeating Gemma's Son in the Beaufine Stakes 12-months ago, Nerodio blotted top form when he followed up with a sixth to Amasenus in the Bolton Sprint.

Bakranich believes their were excuses for the performance and is positive the Playing God gelding is better placed to atone and improve on his effort from last year.

"That was one of the reasons why I was originally against going to the Bolton Sprint after what happened last year," Bakranich said.

"But he went into that race at the end of a long campaign where he was having his seventh run of his preparation.

"He was just tired and had come to the end of a long campaign.

"I'm rapt to have him in the race this year."

While Nerodio is a welcome addition to the Bolton, classy five-year-old, Wilchino is unlikely to go that way.

The Maschino mare ran fifth to Nerodio in last fortnight's Beaufine Stakes, her first run back after last year's breakout campaign.

Wilchino won six consecutive races before trailing the field in the Winterbottom Stakes.

"I'll nominate her, but it's weather dependent, said trainer, Dan Morton.

"She's just not as effective on wet ground.

"There is a 1000m race next week that she could go to."
