The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stable has collected the Mildura Cup with Blaze A Trail registering a soft win.

While Blaze A Trail may not reach to the same heights as Sierra Sue who went on to claim two Group 1 wins following her victory last year, the four-year-old did break the track record in winning on Friday.

Ridden by Teo Nugent, Blaze A Trail ($9) scored by 1-¼ lengths from My Boy Birmingham ($6.50) with Proconsent ($7) a further two lengths away third.

In recording a time of 1.22.17, Blaze A Trail took 0.07 seconds off the previous record set in 2013.

A son of Criterion, a multiple Group 1 winner who was also placed in the 2015 Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup, Blaze A Trail was having only his fifth start for Maher and Eustace.

Blaze A Trail won first-up at Rosehill for the stable and was also successful at Caulfield in May.

Nugent said Blaze A Trail had the race won a long way from home, enjoying a good trail behind the pace set by My Boy Birmingham and Edison.

"When I got the phone call from Ciaron and Dave to come up, I had a quick look at his form, and I was quick to get on and book the tickets to come up here," Nugent said.

"We were very fortunate to land in the position he did from the gate and there was lovely speed early.

"He just fell asleep in my hands. The blinkers went on today and he's a four-year-old bull (entire), so he did relax really well underneath me.

"He gave me a beautiful feel and the race presented so well.

"At the top of the straight I had a lot of horse left and it was a pretty easy watch towards the end."
