Blacker’s 2YO to glow on Sunday

Trainer John Blacker takes a handy team to the meeting in Launceston on Sunday where he expects his classy two-year-old Unique Glow to end the season on a winning note.

In Brief

  • Unique Glow ready to resume with win on Sunday.
  • Stable newcomer Doonican comes with high expectations.
  • Blacker hoping for a BM62 start for Moshama.

Unique Glow lines up in the opening race the Ladbrokes 2YO Handicap over 1120 metres which boasts mostly maiden performers, of which three are first starters.

It is the last two-year-old race of the season and Unique Glow is clearly the best performed, having won a maiden but has placed in feature races including a game second to Happy Clan in the Sires Produce Stakes over 1400m at her most recent outing in early May.

"We gave Unique Glow a little freshen up after the Sires Produce and she has been progressing nicely," Blacker said.

"She hasn't needed to trial, and she will go into Sunday's race in very good order and will be hard to beat."

The main danger appears to be Vokes that was an impressive maiden winner over 1100m in Launceston that followed a game third in the Tasmanian Magic Millions Classic (1200m) behind interstate invader Blonde Venture.

Vokes resumed in Devonport three weeks ago with a third in a 0-62 rating event over 1009m, but she will strip a lot fitter on Sunday.

Blacker is also upbeat about the chances of stable first starter Doonican that comes out of the Chris Waller stable having had four starts for a maiden win over 1700m on the Gold Coast late last month.

"Doonican has been with me for about three weeks and while we don't know a lot about him, he has settled in well and on his work, he is way better than a class one galloper."

The four-year-old gelding is European bred, having been born in Ireland but was unraced until he arrived at Waller's stable late last year and debuted with a last of seven on the Sunshine Coast in May.

But his maiden win on the Gold Coast was impressive and Blacker said the son of No Nay Never arrived fit and healthy.

Blacker is hoping Moshama gains a start in the Armidale Stud Benchmark 62 Handicap over 1420m in which he is first emergency.

"There is a chance that Moshama gains a start in the BM62 and if that happens, I reckon he will be very hard to beat, but as a safeguard I also accepted with him for the class three over 1220m because he has thrived since his last-start third in Launceston last month."

Blacker's quality open class sprinter Blaze Forth has been up a while but he said the rider told hm the gelding made a noise on pulling up last start but checks have revealed no abnormalities.

"Blaze Forth might have copped something in his mouth from kick-back last start in Hobart or maybe got his tongue over the bit, so I've applied a tongue tie for the first time on Sunday.

"His bloodwork came back perfect, so if he doesn't run up to expectations on Sunday I'll tip him out for a spell."

Blacker expects forward showings from Further North in the Kevin Sharkie Maiden-Class 1 over 2150m, Dawn Eagle in the Access Hardware 3YO Handicap  and French Heiress in The Examiner Newspaper class 3 handicap.
