By the Numbers – Launceston, 24th July 2022

The track

Soft 6. Rail +8m 1200m-W/Post, +7m Remainder. Traditionally when the rail is this far out you don't want to be settling too far off the pace and that was the case on Sunday. Only two of the nine winners (Further North and Bell Ringer Boy) were worse than midfield at the 600m.

The star

Troy Baker

It was great to see the likeable hoop back in the winner's circle. A double for Troy on Sunday ended a winning drought that extended back to Signthecheque winning a maiden in Hobart on 22 May. There was a bit of deja vu about the winning rides aboard Hero of Romani and Blushed, using inside draws to save ground before peeling off the rail and proving too good in the home straight.

Sectional standout

Bell Ringer Boy – R9 Class 1 (1620m)

A moderate lead pace in race 7 saw many of the fastest closers of the day come from that race but the performance of Bell Ringer Boy in the last race was one where the clock backed up the visual.

The 4YO gelding broke 12 seconds for his last 200m, his 11.93s split was good enough for the fourth fastest recorded Stridemaster sectionals of the day. Made more impressive by the fact his came at the end of 1620m on a program where there were three 1220m races and one at 1120m.

The performance was needed as the leader wasn't exactly stopping. From the front Spirited Toff was the best closer in the race outside the winner!

This victory gives Bell Ringer Boy a decent overall record of two wins and three minors from 11 starts and though this racing pattern is a hard one to religiously follow, it was a performance that suggests he'll be winning better races than a Class 1.

Apprentices on the rise

Codi Jordan (61 wins) will secure a memorable Premiership win when the curtain comes down on the final meeting of the season in Hobart this Sunday. She's one of four apprentices inside the top 10 on the table along with Erica Byrne Burke (46), Taylor Johnstone (32) and Chelsea Baker (27).

How does the success of our apprentices compare to other states? There's little doubt that this season Tassie's apprentices have been afforded opportunities perhaps never seen previously.

Excluding the ACT, there are nine other apprentices sitting inside the top 10 on their state's Premiership table: Dylan Gibbons and Reece Jones (NSW), Kyle Wilson-Taylor, Jasmine Cornish and Angela Jones (QLD), Holly Watson and Laqdar Romoly (WA), Ben Price and Angus Chung (SA).
