Donna’s Day the real deal

Talented three-year-old filly Donna’s Day could be the real deal following her third successive win in Hobart on Sunday.

In Brief

  • Donna's Day retains her unbeaten status.
  • Bow Mistress a likely target for talented sprinter.
  • Lorensini lands treble at first outing in Tasmania.

Donna's Day led throughout to win the Kevin Sharkie BM62 Handicap over 1200 metres, but she had to dig deep to retain her unbeaten status.

The Scott Brunton-trained filly made her debut in early June with a brilliant maiden win in Hobart and followed up with an equally impressive performance to win a class one over 1200m at the same venue a month later.

But this latest effort was clearly her best as she rose in grade and did all the work to find the lead from a wide gate and then had to fight back after being headed in the home straight.

"This filly has taken time to develop, and she still has so much more to learn, but that's the exciting part because what she is doing now is only a glimpse of what she might be capable of when she puts it all together," Brunton said.

Jockey David Pires who has been aboard the daughter of Domesday in all three starts said the filly has the potential to be aimed at some of the feature fillies and mares' races over the summer carnival.

"Today she travelled great and then did what she does and got off the bit rounding the turn but once she was balanced, she really let down well," Pires said.

"When we were headed in the straight, I thought we were gone, but she dug deep and fought back and then she found again when Nev's Boy flashed down the outside.

"She has been winning on natural ability and has so much more to learn, but she is a very smart sprinter and could even be a Bow Mistress (Group 3) prospect next season."

Treble for interstate visitor

Visiting Victorian jockey Jarrod Lorensini notched a treble at his first meeting in the state, scoring aboard the Scott Brunton-trained Sunset Gun in a benchmark 62 over 1600m and on I'm So Cool for Tegan Keys in a BM68 over 2100m.

Lorensini ended his day with a dead-heat for first aboard King Aviator for interstate trainer Patrick Kearney that hit the line in sync with the John Blacker-trained Alpine Blast (Siggy Carr).

The three-win haul is expected to encourage Lorensini to make more visits to Tasmania in the coming months.
