Weekend wrap: Cahill's black type win, Philonize shines

Dual Licenced horseman Shayne Cahill claimed his first stakes success as a trainer when Morty won the 2022 John Letts Cup at Morphettville on the weekend.

Ridden by Jake Toeroek, Morty has come a long way in a short space of time since winning his maiden at Bordertown in January 2021, Saturday's win his sixth of 24 starts having now banked connections more than $230,000 in prizemoney.

The Listed feature was the second leg of a riding double for Jake Toeroek after Lady Simone scored earlier in the day.

Morty's feature win was slightly overshadowed by the brilliant return of speed filly Philonize when the Dion Koch-trained mare gave a nice field of sprinters a touch up winning by three lengths with Ben Price in the saddle.

It was another superb day in the saddle for Price who took riding honours with a treble also combining to give trainer Mick White his first metropolitan success when Whitchety Grub scored, Price also in the saddle for the Darryl Dodson-trained Disco Tilmorn.

Fellow apprentice Lachlan Neindorf also landing a double with an impressive Zufasta and Residue.

And at Naracoorte on Sunday Dom Tourneur took riding honours with a double aboard the Sue Murphy-trained pair of Hasta La Missile and Hasta La Fiorente, Murphy claiming three winners on her home track with Hi Smokey winning the opening race with Sairyn Fawke in the saddle.
