Confident Cahill returns to happy hunting ground

Shayne Cahill takes two leading chances to the west coast in search of a third Port Lincoln Cup in four years on Friday.

Shayne Cahill trained and rode Dexter You Devil to victory in 2020 and 2021 before they were denied a third successive victory and slice of history last year.

Cahill will be watching from the sidelines in 2023 with his apprentice Caitlin Tootell riding Comfort Girl while Jake Toeroek takes the ride aboard Morty and he said both horses travelled over well and can make claims for both winning.

"Morty bounced off the float with his chest puffed out, Comfort Girl was a little quieter but that's her,'' Cahill said.

"She's like that at home but the moment you jump on her back she soon changes. Like yesterday she was bouncing around the track trying to throw Caitlin off,'' he said.

Cahill also feels the tighter turning track may give Comfort Girl the edge over her better performed stablemate.

"The fact Caitlin was able to win on Comfort Girl the other day obviously gives her some confidence going into the race,'' Cahill said.

"I think she's a horse who will be suited around Port Lincoln and she's also a horse who will appreciate a good tempo, like she got when she won at Strathalbyn.

"She's just keeps ticking over and is super honest, plus there is the fact she'll be carrying the light weight,'' he said.

Morty is second-up from a short break and Cahill said the horse had come through a nice return behind Saskatoon at Morphettville in very good order.

"He had a lot of residual fitness and only had a short break and I've been really happy with him since,'' Cahill said.

"He's going to need a bit of luck but if things fall his way he'll be in the finish,'' he said.

Port Lincoln has always been a special place for Cahill.

"I actually had my first race ride here,'' Cahill said.

"And I rode a Cup winner a few years back for Jim Smith so Port Lincoln has been good to me,'' he said.
