The 28-year-old has played just one match all year, on grass in Stuttgart, and when his name was absent from the entry list last month, his withdrawal seemed to be inevitable.

"This is a very disappointing time for me but I won't be able to compete at the 2024 Australian Open," Kyrgios said on social media.

"Obviously, heartbreaking. I've had so many amazing memories there and I just want to really get back to playing at the top of my game and doing it right, and I need a little more time."

Kyrgios pulled out of last year's tournament just before his first round match as he required knee surgery.

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist was optimisitic that it would be a short spell out of the game, but he didn't return until June which proved to be a false dawn..

He then pulled out of Wimbledon on the eve of the tournament with a wrist injury and he hasn't been seen on a match court since.

Kyrgios, who is currently unranked because of the length of his absence, announced he will be in Melbourne to do media work.
