Liverpool vs Southampton tips: Reds silverware hunt still on track

League Cup winners Liverpool will be in a good mood on Wednesday evening as they continue the hunt for silverware when Championship side Southampton visit Anfield in the FA Cup.

This may seem like a good time to play the Reds, considering they're just three days removed from an emotional 120 minutes at Wembley, but history says otherwise.

The Carabao Cup finalists tend to win their next game, but Liverpool are a more unique case as they've been decimated by injuries.

Southampton fell foul of Millwall's old new manager bounce on Saturday as Neil Harris' side masterminded a surprise 2-1 win to hand the Saints back-to-back Championship losses.

Russell Martin's visitors will be desperately keen to bounce back and offer something up to the fans, but they'll know their bread and butter is automatic promotion.

While Liverpool may be able to count on the return of Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and others at the weekend, Southampton will need to go full-strength to navigate a tricky trip to Birmingham.

These two capped off last season with one of those weird and wonderful results you get on the final day of a Premier League season when they drew 4-4 at St Marys.

However, there's no mistaking Liverpool's dominance at Anfield. They've won six straight meetings there, scoring three or more in five.

For all the quality they've shown this season, the Saints have won just four matches against teams in the top half of the table, and they've failed to win 10 times on their travels.

We may be proved wrong, but we don't think this is the banana skin it's being billed as. Martin's side lacks a cutting edge lately and doesn't function as well out of possession.
