Staking Strategy: Hobart - Sunday, 7th April 2024

The second thoroughbred meeting in the space of three days is in Hobart on Sunday with eight races scheduled.

Field sizes are limited for most of the day, with the rail in the +15m position.

R1 Ladbrokes Owners Incentive Scheme Maiden, 1100m

With a stack of speed drawn inside and outside, the debutant ALPINE THUNDER (1) should enjoy a perfect trail from gate 1 and get last crack at them. He's trailled up well and looks a nice prospect. CORONATION KEELY (7) looks the hardest to beat. There was little separating her and Alpine Thunder in their trial. RIDE THE MOON (9) didn't fire in Launceston but her prior effort around here was good enough to be competitive in this. Can entertain SHE PLAYS GAMES (6) for first four's from a favourable draw.

R2 Tasmanian Bloodstock Maiden, 1450m

Carnelian Rock (5) ran a cracking race on Friday night in a $50k race. Provided he handles the quick turn around he looks to have lengths on his rivals. Stablemate LET'S MESSAROUND (2) got a mile out of his ground last start and was never in contention at any stage. There was plenty of merit in the previous run after trekking wide throughout from a wide gate. MAY WE ALL (3) didn't finish off at his latest and was disappointing and would need to improve. MISS PRIVATE (6) has found the line soundly at her last two since resuming but is still a maiden after 15 starts. FRENETICO (9) will appreciate getting out to this trip. Blinkers going on for the first time may be beneficial.

R3 Ladbrokes Odds Surge Maiden, 1450m

Buel (1) has only been placed twice in his 16-start career. Doubt he'll find a better opportunity than this to break through against very moderate opposition. He did enough first-up for his new stable and draws to get every possible. PEPPARONI (8) is lightly raced and is coming along okay, having been placed at her last couple. MISS PEBBLES (5) is another that has had more than enough chances. She's hard to follow but is capable of giving this a shake. GEE GEE TYCOON (7) is very one paced and getting out to the 1400m can only be a positive.

R4 Aviso Tas Insurance Brokers 0 - 60, 1450m

I'm Keefe (1) will take some catching around here after a forgivable effort last time. KEEPER'S TOUCH (9) was in restricted room most of the straight last week behind Share The Gold in Launceston and his beaten margin was unfair. He hasn't won for over two years though. GEEGEES DOWN SOUTH (4) will find this more to his liking. Third-up today, he should be ready to deliver. NO ACCESS (2) is crying out for this trip, needs tempo to suit though and the 15-metre rail is no plus for him.

R5 Winning Edge Presentations Class 1 Handicap, 1650m

Montezulu (1) surprised the market breaking through at big odds at start no seven just over a fortnight back in Launceston. Thought there was a bit of substance to the win and he might just go on with it. BOUNTY BAY (7) has found the line nicely at both local starts and the form around her is strong. WADDY WADDY (2) is a recent winner over 2150m, dropping back to the mile the query for him. In contrast , OPALSON (5) looks better placed stepping back in distance. FASHION FOX (4) hasn't fired a shot this time in. Fourth-up, back onto his home deck and out in trip could see improvement.

R6 Ladbroke It! Benchmark 60 Handicap, 2100m

Dalton Dancer (1) and HAPPY CLAN (2) clashed a fortnight back with the former proving a touch too strong over the concluding stages. Both have strong claims again. AFRIDI (6) wasn't far behind them on that occasion but did have every possible and needs to find a length or two. Notably, Newitt's been booked to do the steering. Last start winner NAVAJO WARRIOR (3) won in good style over this trip but there's clearly more depth to this.

R7 Campbell Town Hotel Motel Benchmark 68 Handicap, 1200m

Hot Relation (2) won softly first-up last campaign for her new stable. She went to a totally new level last time in and should be very hard to hold out. INTISAR (4) had excuses last time behind Jaguar Stone and can bounce back. The speedster ETOSHA (7) is always hard to run down and with the 4kg claim has a significant weight pull over her rivals. A complete forgive run last time. THELMA (3) and JEHBENTI (6) are both last start winners and are in the mix.

R8 Kevin Sharkie Class 1 Handicap, 1100m

Fear The Sting (4) had no favours in the running at all last start and was a complete forgive. Gets a far better setup here on paper and is one of the leading hopes. It was surprising how well WHIZ BY (6) hung on in class 2 grade here last time after working extremely hard on the speed. Has to be rated a good chance on that effort. ROHZHAE (3) continues to race consistently and will be thereabouts. Lightly raced NOT RICH ENUFF (1) has been off the scene for close to 12 months. Did enough in a recent trial without catching the eye and would want to see market confidence. Minor claims only for SHALL WE PLAY (6). MIRA FLORES (7) could sneak into first four's at a price.
