* Stage 9 - Hindley wins the first key mountain stage, featuring the brutal Blockhaus climb at the finish, and rises from 15th to fifth overall

* Stage 14 - second on the stage to Torino and moves from fourth to second overall. Gain six seconds on race leader Richard Carapaz and is now seven seconds behind him on general classification

* Stage 16 - third on the stage to Aprica, with Carapaz fourth, and gains four seconds of time bonus to be within three seconds of the race lead

* Stage 18 - punctures late in the stage to Treviso, finishing a minute behind Carapaz, but does not lose any time on general classification under race rules because it happened within three kilometres of the finish

* Stage 20 - sixth on the stage to Marmolada, breaking and dropping Carapaz on the last climb to take the overall lead by one minute 25 seconds, with the Ecuador rider having been hampered by not having Richie Porte to help after the Aussie abandoned with gastroenteritis the previous day

* Stage 21 - Hindley said he would "die for the jersey" but victory was never in doubt as he finished safely, 15th on the stage to earn an historic win by one minute 18 seconds.
