Salt to replace Roy at Kolkata Knight Riders

Phil Salt has been snapped up by Kolkata Knight Riders in this year’s Indian Premier League after England team-mate Jason Roy withdrew due to personal reasons.

Salt was unsold in the December draft despite two successive T20 centuries for England in the West Indies, hitting the second in Trinidad just a few hours after he was snubbed by the franchises.

Afterwards he described being overlooked as "confusing", adding he "expected to be picked up" after two fifties and a strike-rate of 163.91 in nine games in his debut campaign in 2023 for Delhi Capitals.

But Roy pulling out of the latest edition which gets under way on March 22 means he has been replaced by Salt, who was bought at his reserve price of 1.5 crore (around £140,000).

"Kolkata Knight Riders have named Phil Salt as a replacement for Jason Roy after the latter pulled out of the upcoming TATA IPL 2024 owing to personal reasons," a statement on the IPL website said.

"Having remained unsold in the auction after representing Delhi Capitals last year, this will be Salt's second season in the IPL."
