$3.7million Upgrade Announced For Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie will be the beneficiary of a $3.7million upgrade to their racing and training facilities.

Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, yesterday announced a $3.7 million upgrade of racing and training facilities at Port Macquarie Racecourse.

The most prominent phase of the project will be a full overhaul of the course proper which will include replacement of the top section of the course proper’s profile, as well as improving the cambers and turns.

“The upgrade of the course proper will greatly improve racing at Port Macquarie Racecourse,” Mrs Williams said. “The course will better handle wet weather and the improved cambers and turns will make for safer and more competitive racing.

“The upgrade of the course proper will be preceded by a full renewal of the sand fast work training track at Port Macquarie. The renewal of both the course proper and the fast work track will further enhance the importance of racing and training at Port Macquarie,” Mrs Williams said.

The $3.7 million project will be funded by Racing NSW from accumulated race fields fees. Racing NSW Chief Executive, Peter V’landys AM, underlined the importance of Port Macquarie.

“Port Macquarie is a vital region in country racing and the work to the course proper will ensure the racecourse is both conducive to competitive racing and safe for jockey and horse,” Mr V’landys said.

“These upgrades will further ensure its standing and confidence among punters and I congratulate the local member, Leslie Williams, for her continued focus on bringing this project to the forefront. The upgraded training facilities will also underpin the importance of Port Macquarie as a training centre on the North Coast,” Mr V’landys added.

Port Macquarie Race Club Chairman, Greg Delaforce, welcomed the announcement: “Port Macquarie is one of the busiest racecourses in country NSW and these upgrades will enable the track to provide the fairest possible racing as well as excellent training facilities into the future."

Port Macquarie Race Club will also adopt a new governance model including the appointment of independent directors to complement elected members of the Board.
