Positive financial result recorded

Racing Victoria (RV) has today announced its financial results for the year ending 30 June, 2014 – with the state’s principal racing authority recording a net profit of $18.4 million.

Speaking at RV’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), RV Chairman, Robert Roulston, said the recorded profit had enabled RV to reduce its debts of $26.3 million – accumulated from the roll out of the industry infrastructure program – to nil at the end of FY14.

Trakus technology for Victoria

Racing Victoria (RV) and the Victorian Coalition Government have today announced that world-leading Trakus timing and tracking technology will be installed at selected Victorian racecourses, providing fans and participants with enhanced coverage of the in-race performance of every single horse.

The $1.83 million investment is stage one of Victoria’s introduction of Trakus with Moonee Valley and Caulfield Racecourses the first tracks to have the technology installed, both in time for the feature 2015 autumn racing period. The location of a third stage one installation will be finalised by year’s end, with RV keen to expand the Trakus technology to other Victorian tracks into the future.

Rawiller poised for Premierships move

He may only have four rides on the day, but with the average price of his mounts just a touch over $4.50 Brad Rawiller appears well placed to make a move in the Spring Racing Jockey Premiership.

Representing charity partner Cystic Fibrosis Victoria, Rawiller currently sits in fifth position in the Premier Jockey classification on 25 points, ten behind the leader Glen Boss.

Fawkner draws perfectly for Cox Plate

Nick Williams was thrilled with Fawkner’s barrier draw in Saturday’s $3 million Sportingbet Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

The second horse drawn out of the barrel at Tuesday morning’s barrier draw, Williams didn’t hesitate to select gate four, after three-year-old Wandjina had already taken barrier five.

Wide draw for Cox Plate raider Adelaide

Coolmore’s hopes of winning Australasia’s weight-for-age championship were dealt a blow on Tuesday morning, with their Sportingbet Cox Plate runner allocated the second widest starting gate for Saturday’s 2040m showpiece at Moonee Valley.

Adelaide was the last horse plucked out of the barrel by Chief Steward Terry Bailey and, as a result, connections only had barrier 13 to select, after representatives for The Cleaner had earlier opted for the widest alley.

Bowman hands over Criterion reins

He won’t be there to take the glory on Saturday, but Hugh Bowman was still doing his bit to give Criterion his best shot at Sportingbet Cox Plate glory on Tuesday morning.

The star Sydney jockey suggested James McDonald ride on the David Payne-trained contender at Breakfast with the Best, which was the four-year-old’s first look at the Moonee Valley circuit.

Lankan draws wide in Manikato

Jockey Craig Newitt wasn’t pleased with Lankan Rupee’s barrier draw in Friday night’s $1 million Sportingbet Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

The Mick Price-trained 2013/14 Australian Racehorse of the Year came up with gate nine of 12 in the Group 1 sprint, a draw which Newitt described as ‘not ideal’.

Acceptances taken for Flemington features

Racing Victoria has today taken first acceptances for three feature Group 1 races during next month's Emirates Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington.

Contenders were narrowed for the $1.5 million AAMI Victoria Derby, $1 million Crown Oaks (2500m) and $1 million Darley Classic (1200m) at today's 12 noon deadline.

Plenty of options for Deep Field

A trip to Melbourne for Deep Field is still a possibility despite the four-year-old not being among the first acceptances for next month’s $1 million Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington.

Unbeaten in four starts, the son of Northern Meteor recorded an effortless three-length victory at his latest run in Saturday’s City Tattersalls Club Lighning (1100m) at Randwick.

Bel Sprinter could go straight to WA

Bel Sprinter could head straight into next month’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) in Perth after the seven-year-old wasn’t among today’s first acceptances for the $1 million Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington on November 8.

Returning after the second throat operation of his career, the son of Bel Esprit scored a dead-heat victory in Saturday’s Group 2 Perri Cutten Caulfield Sprint (1100m).

RAD Board - Hugh Bowman

Jockey Hugh Bowman has successfully appealed against the severity of his penalty for improper riding at the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) Board today, with his period of suspension reduced from 20 to 16 meetings.

At Caulfield on Saturday, 18 October 2014, Mr Bowman was found guilty of a charge of improper riding on his mount Light Up Manhattan in Race 4 the Racing.com Caulfield Classic (2000m.)
