Queensland Star Lands In Sydney

A horse who has come to the “Big Smoke’’ after winning 13 of his 15 starts faces his next big test at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday as Sydney race fans enjoy live racing and a backdrop to Melbourne’s Derby Day meeting at Flemington.

Our Boy Malachi has joined the powerful Rosehill Gardens stable of Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes as he attempts to build on his imposing record in the Turner Freeman Lawyers Flying Handicap over 1100m.

Although he takes on a slick field of sprinters, Our Boy Malachi has been installed TAB Fixed Odds favourite, ahead of Dances On Stars, Zaratone, Agent and Scream Machine).

Another potential clue to next year’s winner of the world’s richest race for two year olds – the $3.5 million Tooheys New Golden Slipper – may be uncovered in the opening event, the CFMEU/West Tradies Plate over 1100m.

Boom Goldolphin youngster Exosphere is the favourite, with punters looking to line up his performance with that of stablemate Furnaces who won last week’s two year old race by more than six lengths.

Saturday’s race history also has a link to two Sydney Group 1 runners at Flemington, Sweet Idea in the Myer Classic, and ATC Derby winner Criterion in the Mackinnon Stakes.

Criterion beat Sweet Idea in the same two year old race on this weekend at Rosehill Gardens two years ago.

Punters at Rosehill Gardens will see all the action live from Flemington on the biggest screen in the southern hemisphere in the infield, with a host of Sydney horses and jockeys taking strong local form into the meeting down south.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager of Racing Matt Rudolph said each Saturday meeting in the coming weeks held the promise of showing the next two year old champion of the Autumn.

“We saw a first class performance in the two year olds last week and there will be another measuring stick this week with many trainers following the system that a Tooheys New Golden Slipper winner will have been seen at the races before the end of the year.’’

Rosehill Gardens offers free parking and scheduled train services from Central to the track.

Punters can also enjoy free high capacity Wi-Fi across the whole racecourse precinct.
