After comprehensive feedback the MRVC has modernised its dress code to ensure it represents modern fashion while maintaining the distinction of the Members areas.

The appetite to “relax” the Members Dress Code at certain times throughout the season emanated from our 2014 Member’s Survey. As a consequence we are now proud to announce the following changes to the dress code at The Valley.

Relaxed for Gentlemen (Over 13 years, Applies to all night meetings and summer day meetings):

Are required to wear a collared shirt (polo shirts not permitted) with tailored trousers or chinos. No tie is required, and suit coat, sports coat or blazer is optional. Dress shoes or leather boat shoes must be worn.

Traditional for Gentlemen: As above but are required to wear a collar and tie, and either a suit coat, sports coat or blazer. Chinos are also permitted.

Ladies are expected to maintain a suitable standard of dress; we now permit acceptable Midriff, Tailored Skort, Tailored Shorts and Sandals. Not permitted items include Denim, Revealing Belly Button, and Untailored Shorts.

Moonee Valley Racing Club CEO Michael Browell welcomes the change, recognising the importance of staying on trend with current demands of Members and their Guests.

“While traditionalists may see our relaxed dress code and changes to women’s dress code as a step away from what has been place at racecourses for decades, we felt we needed to adopt to the changing landscape of men’s and ladies fashion.”

“The atmosphere and average temperatures of our night and summer racing schedule lends itself to relaxed race wear, so common sense has played a big part in the decision also.”

“We conducted a survey of our members last year and there was an appetitive from our members to update the dress code. We feel that we have achieved this whilst managing to maintain the dignity and prestige of the Member’s Enclosure at The Valley.”

“We’re looking to create the best possible on-course experience for our Members and this announcement now clears any confusion around what is and isn’t acceptable attire in this day and age.”

The new Members Dress Code applies on all meeting starting Australia Stakes Day 24 January.
