Oakbank Carnival to generate millions for Hills economy

The world’s largest picnic-style race meet, the Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival, is expected to inject $10 million into the Adelaide Hills economy this April.

Held over the Easter long weekend – on Saturday, April 4 and Monday, April 6 – the popular annual event will also boost tourist numbers as an expected 60,000 visitors flock to the Hills town for the 139th event.

Oakbank Racing Club Chairman John Glatz said the Club is committed to not only creating the best event for racegoers, but also to working with Hills businesses to ensure the local community continues to benefit from the carnival.

“Oakbank has been part of the Adelaide Hills community for nearly 140 years and it seems a nobrainer to the Club to work more closely with others who have their businesses in the region,” Mr Glatz said.

“As a major tourist attraction for the region, Oakbank annually attracts about 60,000 visitors and, on State Government figures, generates business for the region in the vicinity of more than $10 million.

“It’s vital that we work with other businesses in the Adelaide Hills to build our business and at the same time build theirs.”

Returning to this year’s event is The Paddock. A stylish precinct where racegoers can experience elements of modern luxury within a picnic setting, enjoying quality food and drink while listening to a laid-back soundtrack spun on vinyl records.

The Locavore, Red Cacao Chocolatier, Little Acre Foods and Quince Catering have put together mouth-watering menus for The Paddock’s punters, while Golding, Sidewood and Somerled will provide their top vinos as the perfect accompaniments.

“We wanted to bring Oakbank back to its roots – reviving the grandeur of racing in a unique country setting and The Paddock proved a great way to do this in 2014,” Mr Glatz said.

“There promises to be something for everyone, with a combination of jumps and flat racing on track while glamorous fashion and premium food and wine are enjoyed off track.”

Children can take part in the Melba’s Giant Easter Egg Hunt and enjoy the long list of other activities on offer at the popular KidsZone, while stylish racegoers can compete for the Fashion at The Races Oakbank title on Monday.

One lucky punter and a female jockey will also take home a $4000 diamond ring crafted by Chris Sheehan from Stirling Jewellers. Mr Sheehan also makes the $5000 trophy awarded to the winner of the prestigious Great Eastern Steeplechase each year.
