Bumper list of nominations for Scone carnival

Scone Jockey Club CEO, Sarah Wills admits she always gets nervous before the club’s annual two-day carnival and this year’s edition on Friday and Saturday will be the biggest yet.

A record 439 runners have been nominated across the 16 races at Australia’s richest country racing carnival where nearly $2 million in prizemoney will be up for grabs.

“The nominations have never been this high. It’s the most noms we’ve ever had so it’s fantastic for the carnival,” Wills said.

“Things are looking very good ahead of the carnival and it’s shaping up to be a fantastic two days. Marquee sales are at a record high.

“It reflects the interest people have for the two days and it’s the carnival that everyone wants to come to.”

Day one of the carnival will feature the $200,000 Emirates Park Scone Cup (1600m) where 21 horses have been nominated.

On day two, the $400,000 Inglis RL 3YO Guineas (1400m) highlights the day and it’s well backed up by the $200,000 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) and a further four Listed races worth $140,000 each.

Wills said it’s a meeting that no other country raceday can offer and expects another huge crowd which is also eligible to compete in the Fashions on the Field, worth more than $20,000.

“It’s an opportunity for the horses to win some black-type,” she said. “I get nervous before the two days because I want everyone to enjoy themselves.”

Final acceptances for both days will be declared after 9am on Wednesday (May 13).
