Charities Benefit From Melbourne Carnival Premierships

Jockeys and trainers will be competing for more than just prizemoney in Melbourne this spring.

Now in its second year, the Spring Racing Carnival Premierships will promote and celebrate excellence at the elite level among jockeys and trainers along and reward a charity of choice with more than $135,000 in charitable donations and prizemoney.

The competition will take in 12 premier race days commencing with Saturday’s Hyland Race Colours Underwood Stakes Day at Caulfield and conclude on Sandown Spring Carnival Day at William Hill Park on November 14.

Points will be awarded to the first three placegetters in each race across the 12 premier racedays, with bonus points on offer for those who excel in Group 1 races.

The sport’s biggest names will represent one of 11 charities with more than $80,000 in donations to be given away throughout the nine-week premiership period.

There are three Spring Racing Carnival Premiership categories, with prizemoney and charity donations from the person who accumulates the most points within each outlined as follows:

• Premier Spring Jockey - The leading jockey across all races during the Premiership period will be awarded $25,000. In addition, a $25,000 donation will be made to the winning jockey’s nominated charity.

• Premier Spring Trainer - The leading trainer across all races during the Premiership period will be awarded $25,000. In addition, a $25,000 donation will be made to the winning trainer’s nominated charity.

• Premier Spring Young Gun Jockey – The leading young gun jockey (under 26 years of age on December 31 2015) across all races during the Premiership period will be awarded $5,000. In addition, a $5,000 donation will be made to the winning jockey’s nominated charity.

The nominated charity of the jockey and trainer who each accumulate the most points on a raceday will also receive a $1,000 donation, which will double to $2,000 on the final day of the Premierships.

The inaugural Spring Racing Carnival Premierships saw premier riders Dwayne Dunn and Damien Oliver fight out a thrilling battle in the premier jockey category, while co-trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig were the dominant force within the trainers’ ranks.

Racing fans will also have the opportunity to participate in the Spring Racing Carnival Premierships and potentially celebrate their own lucrative payday.

One lucky fan will win the trip of a lifetime for two to the famous Hong Kong International Races in December with World Racing Tours, valued at $9,990, by predicting the overall winning jockey and trainer of the Spring Racing Carnival Premierships.

TAB has Dwayne Dunn, Damien Oliver and Craig Williams $4 equal favourites for the jockeys’ title, James McDonald a $1.70 favourite to be crowned the young gun jockey and Darren Weir and the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig partnership $4.40 equal favourites for the trainers’ title.
