Police Charge Victorian Trainer With Animal Cruelty

Racing Victoria has stood down restricted-licensed trainer, Bruce Akers following animal cruelty and criminal offence charges laid by Victoria Police.

Under the Australian Rules of Racing AR8(z)(a), RV has the power to suspend any license, right or privilege granted to a licensed person who is charged with a criminal offence.

RV is working with the RSCPA and Victoria Police after an estimated 22 dead horses were found on a property in Bulla.

RV has arranged for equine re-homing groups to re-locate the remaining horses to an appropriate location to ensure their welfare is safeguarded and will provide funding assistance for any rehabilitation and feeding regimes required.

RV condemns any behaviour resulting in the mistreatment and neglect of a horse and considers any such behaviour abhorrent and appalling animal welfare abuse.

As the matter is under investigation by Victoria Police, Racing Victoria is not in a position to provide further comment at this stage.
