Shazee Lee wins 2017 Hawkesbury Guineas Group 3 $200,000 at Hawkesbury (NSW), 1400m.
The $51 outsider Shazee Lee caused quite a surprise in winning here, but she staged a good effort, nevertheless. She settled back in second last place in the 12-horse field, tracking a good pace, before saving ground on the inner rounding the home turn. She got a split at the 200m and then finished strongly to grab a good win in the last few strides.
The favourite Prompt Response worked in the early stages before easing to race in third place. She was shuffled out three wide (without cover) on passing the 800m, raced to the front at the 200m and was only caught nearing the post for a really good second after doing quite a bit of work in the earlier part of the race.
Salsonic raced at the tail of the field, fanned widest of all on straightening and then ran on well for a good third.
Of the others Caerless Choice made ground for (1.4 lengths) fourth, Spright was midfield on the rails, got through on the inner in the straight and seemed to have her chance before finishing (2.3 lengths) eighth while Calanda was fifth on the rails but was blocked at a vital staged before finishing an untested (3.6 lengths) tenth.
