Black Heart Bart wins Underwood Stakes,Group 1 $750,000 at Caulfield, 1800m.

In a training-triumph for new trainer Lindsey Smith the nine-year-old Black Heart Bart , who was having this third run since connections elected to make a comeback from retirement with the gelding, was the surprise winner at odds of $101.

He had a good trip in fourth place on the rails, moved up well at the 200m, took the lead at the 100m and then dug deep to win well, his sixth win at Group 1 level in 56 starts.

The favourite Homesman was caught deep from his wide barrier (12) racing in a midfield position before improving (still deep) rounding the home turn. He challenged at the 200m and then fought gamely for second after a difficult trip.

Gailo Chop raced in third place (three deep) outside the leading pair before moving up well at the home turn. He then kept fighting on really well for third in a good effort at his second run back.

Hartnell settled in sixth place on the rails, improved between runners on straightening and then kept finishing on nicely for (1.8 lengths) fourth. Gatting raced outside the leader (Trap For Fools) and kept fighting on well until halfway down before finishing (2.3 lengths) fifth.
