North's Adams mulling AFL coaching future

North Melbourne caretaker Leigh Adams isn't yet sure if AFL senior coaching is for him but wants to enjoy the ride over the next six weeks.

Unlike GWS caretaker Mark McVeigh, who has made no secret of his AFL senior coaching ambitions, Leigh Adams is undecided on whether he sees himself in a top job long-term.

The possibility was a distant one for the 34-year-old until he was shifted into a temporary role in charge of North Melbourne following David Noble's sacking this week.

After settling an emotional playing group, Adams immediately began preparing the last-placed Kangaroos for Saturday night's clash with Richmond.

A moment for a deep breath wouldn't go astray as he ponders the idea of pursuing a career as a senior coach.

"You can see the pressure that comes with this job and I haven't made any decisions on whether it's something I want to do," Adams said.

"Forty-eight hours ago I was a development coach, coaching VFL footy, so I haven't put too much thought into it.

"Hopefully the next six weeks goes well and it might be something that I want to pursue but at this stage I'm in a really great position just to sit back and enjoy it."

A courageous midfielder, Adams played 104 games for North Melbourne before his premature retirement in 2015 because of concussion issues.

He began his coaching journey at suburban South Croydon, winning an Eastern Football League premiership, and spent two years in charge of VFL club Coburg before returning to the Kangaroos as a development coach.

"I'm 34 years old and had been really enjoying the job that I'd been doing," Adams said.

"It's my third year here now and down the track it (AFL senior coaching) was something that I thought I might look to go towards but I've probably sped up that thinking process a little bit."

Adams said Noble had been great for his professional development and the outgoing coach told his replacement this week to do things his own way in the hot seat.

The caretaker has since outlined his desire to simplify North Melbourne's attacking game plan and create a positive atmosphere inside the club.

Adams has leant on close friend Jade Rawlings and former Kangaroos coach Brad Scott for advice.

"He's been really good to bounce ideas off," Adams said of Rawlings, who had 11 games as Richmond caretaker after Terry Wallace's sacking in 2009.

"I still keep in regular contact with Brad Scott, who coached me for a long time, and they're two guys that I take a lot of advice from."
