The famous Lockett-Coventry signs were removed for the installation of "sexy scoreboards" but the goalkicking legends' names will be back in Marvel Stadium.

"Sexy scoreboards" have replaced the names of two legendary goalkickers at Marvel Stadium but don't expect the absence of the Lockett and Coventry signs to be permanent.

There are plans to reinstate the names of Tony Lockett and Gordon Coventry, the two most prolific forwards in VFL/AFL history, in the AFL-owned facility by the end of the year.

Two new, state-of-the-art scoreboards have hung from both ends of the ground since the start of the AFL season to kick-off a $225 million redevelopment of the Docklands stadium.

AFL boss GIllon McLachlan colourfully spruiked the move back in February.

"I think they are going to be the largest scoreboards in the world, if not the largest in the Docklands precinct," McLachlan proclaimed to reporters.

"The highest definition, sexiest things you can possibly imagine."

Since the giant screens were installed, the Lockett and Coventry signs have been notably missing inside the ground.

Fans and media alike have wondered if the famous names had been removed completely.

However, the AFL still officially refers to the ends of the ground by the names they have long been known by.

Construction work in and around the stadium has made it difficult to reinstate the Lockett and Coventry signs, with management trying to find the ideal spot to position them near the monster-sized scoreboards.

AAP understands the AFL is attempting to reinstall the signs in the ground by the end of the season.

Collingwood legend Coventry held the VFL/AFL goal-kicking record for 62 years, before former St Kilda and Sydney Swans superstar Lockett passed the extraordinary mark when he kicked his 1300th career goal in 1999.
