NSW miss WNCL final, SA to face Tasmania

NSW have fallen at the final hurdle to return to the women's 50-over domestic final, with South Australia instead qualifying to face minor premiers Tasmania.

NSW have fallen one point short in their bid to return to the Women's National Cricket League final, with Tasmania to host South Australia in Sunday's 50-over decider.

The powerhouse of women's cricket in Australia for the past three decades, NSW missed the finals for the first time in 24 years last summer.

They had looked on track to return again this year, needing only a win against Queensland on Tuesday to qualify for Sunday's clash at Blundstone Arena.

But in pursuit of Queensland's 7-214, they fell well short at 9-152 from their 50 overs with rookie Angelina Genford playing a lone hand with an unbeaten 45 at Hurstville Oval.

"Queensland did everything better than we did, in all aspects of the game they deserved to win," Breakers coach Gav Twining said.

"When we've got to pressure games we had to win to make a final, we have fallen short.

South Australia will play in the third final in their history, and Tasmania their first.

With Australia players in New Zealand in the World Cup, Tasmania have benefited from several former international stars on their books.

Elyse Villani, Sarah Coyte, Molly Strano and Naomi Stalenberg have all regularly featured, giving them the most star-studded team of the competition.

They have lost one game through the tournament, with Coyte taking 13 wickets at 18.38 and former New Zealand international Rachel Priest scoring 289 runs at 36.12.
