A thumping unbeaten 75-run partnership off five overs swept Delhi Capitals to victory in the second match of the new Indian Premier League campaign.

Capitals, coached by Ricky Ponting, were beaten finalists in 2020 and headed the regular season only to lose in the play-offs in 2021.

Lalit Yadav cracked 48no off 38 balls and Axar Patel 38no off 17 after Capitals had slipped to 6-104 in the 14th over chasing Mumbai Indians 5-177.

Patel hit three sixes and Lalit Yadav two as a bowling attack featuring Daniel Sams, Jasprit Bumrah and Tymal Mills was put to the sword.

Bumrah's 3.2 wicketless overs went for 43 as Capitals won with ten balls to spare. Australian Sams suffered even greater punishment, conceding 0-57 off four overs while Mills' three overs were hit for 26.

Mumbai's innings was built around 81 off 48 balls by Ishan Kishan, supported by Rohit Sharma (41 off 32). Kuldeep Yadav took 3-18 from his four overs.

Capitals will have David Warner and Mitchell Marsh available from 5 April.
