Former international Elyse Villani has jumped ship from the Melbourne Stars to the Hobart Hurricanes in the WBBL.

The 32-year-old top-order batter has inked a two-year deal with the Hurricanes and will skipper the side.

Villani, who has played 96 short-form games for Australia, captained Tasmania to their first domestic one-day title earlier this year and was the fourth highest run-scorer in the WBBL last season.

She said it was a difficult decision to leave her home state of Victoria.

"I have formed so many wonderful memories and friendships that will last a lifetime and have enjoyed every moment representing the Stars and playing with some amazing people," she said on Wednesday.

"However, the timing was right for me on a personal level.

"I love living in Tasmania and I'm really excited to commit fully to my new home."

Villani joins Nicola Carey, Maisy Gibson, Heather Graham, Ruth Johnston, Amy Smith, Molly Strano and Rachel Trenaman as players currently contracted to the Hurricanes.

Hobart finished sixth last season with five wins from 14 matches and have not made the finals since the second year of the WBBL.

"I thoroughly enjoyed leading a lot of these players last season in the WNCL. I believe we have the squad and coaching staff required to compete for the trophy," Villani said.
