Eyes on Glover ahead of FedEx St Jude Championship

The 57th edition of the FedEx St Jude Championship takes place in Memphis, Tennessee, USA and is the next event on the PGA Tour calendar following Lucas Glover's win at the Wyndham Championship last week.

The event takes place at TPC Southwind, a 7,244-yard, par 70 course with 12 par fours, two par fives and four par threes. However, the majority of par fours are on the longer side which could benefit the big drivers in the field.

The start of the FedEx Cup playoff series, which includes next week's BMW Championship and the Tour Championship at the end of August, brings the biggest names in world golf to the Volunteer State.

Unsurprisingly, world #1 Scottie Scheffler is the bookies' favourite at 6/1. Prior to The Open Championship, Scheffler had recorded seven consecutive top five finishes on the PGA Tour, but a tied-23rd finish in Royal Liverpool stopped that run.

He still ranks 1st on the PGA lists in several categories – shots gained off the tee (1.080), shots gained on approach (1.304), shots gained tee-to-green (2.807) and shots gained total (2.616). However, his putting has been suspect in 2022-23, ranking 140th in shots gained (-0.192), 116th in putts per round (28.99) and 157th in one put percentage (37.79%). Also, he hasn't won on the PGA Tour since March at The Players Championship.

Americans have won the last seven tournaments with Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed winning two titles each – neither will be in attendance, however, having failed to qualify. The next Americans in the betting are Partick Cantlay (16/1) and Xander Schauffele (18/1).

Cantlay has struggled to contend at the front of the field this term with just nine top 10 finishes in 19 tournaments. He narrowly missed the cut in the Scottish Open before finishing outside the top 30 at The Open Championship.

This course may favour him, however. He's 1st on the PGA Tour in total driving, going for the green and short putting. He's also fifth in shots gained (1.977), third in scoring (69.10), 2nd on par fours and he also averages 4.52 birdies per round, second on the tour.

Schauffele, meanwhile, has been outside the top 10 for the past six tournaments, A second-place finish at the Wells Fargo Championship in May was his most recent success. Stats-wise, he's 43rd off the tee in shots gained (0.271) which could hamper him at TPC Southwind. He's 19th in putting average (1.723) which bodes well on the greens, but his approach play raises some questions.

Contenders from abroad include Spain's Jon Rahm (8/1), Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy (9/1) and Norway's Viktor Hovland (18/1) - all should be considered.

However, it's time to go full circle and look at the form of Glover – he has four top 10 finishes in his last five tournaments including victory last week's Wyndham Championship success. His approach game is exceptional, and his putting has been much improved in recent tournaments.

At 80/1, he's worth a small bet on the outright victory and 11/2 for a top 10 finish is a worth punt. For those looking to ensure profit, a top 20 finish at 19/10 could almost cover the other two bets.

Another outside bet could be Austrian Sepp Straka who finished second on this course a year ago. He won the John Deere Classic in July and finished tied-second at The Open Championship. He did miss the cut at the 3M Open but hit even par on both rounds.

Again, bets can be covered with prices of 7/2 for a top 10 finish and 13/10 for a top 20 place – both solid options on form.

With the stacked field, it's likely the top finish markets are the play, and more value can be found in the middle of the betting field.
